Dean Crooke - happy with the new Mk2 HyperMAXracer
|
A perfect sunny day greeted the drivers for the first round of the Hyper Racer 2008 Australian 'Manufacturers' Championship held in conjunction with the VSKClub series at Phillip Island.
HyperRacer was there in force with Dean Crooke, Mark Wicks, Brad Stebbing, and Shaun Trounson contesting the light division and Chris Jewel the heavy division. Patrick Atherton was out with a dodgy foot and Sean Whitfield was recovering from an appendix operation on the previous Monday.
Last year's club Heavy division Champion, Mark Wicks, decided to set himself a higher bar by entering the 160 kg Light division at 178 kgs. A big ask for sure, but he did a fantastic job, mixing it with the front runners to finish 4th overall on the day.
Brad Stebbing was on the pace having sorted out the set-up of his HyperRacer to his liking. He finished a strong second overall.
In 2007, Dean Crooke had handed Mark Wicks the job of flying the Hyper flag, so that he could spend the season developing a new chassis. The development exercise was of course detrimental to the getting of consistent race results, so he was understandably excited about debuting the Mk 2 HyperRacer for 2008. All his hard work was rewarded. He had a great day finishing first overall. When asked about the handling of the new chassis, he couldn't get the smile off his face.
In the Heavy Division, Chris Jewell had a so so day. In the first heat, he was holding a strong second after a race long duel with Lee Filliponi, when on the last lap, Lee disconnected his brain and threw his kart, from two karts back, down Lukey Heights Hill and into the unsuspecting Jewell's side pod. Jewell was later heard to say that "It was an incredible move by Filliponi, as there is probably no driver alive with the 'special' skills required to t-bone another driver from such a great distance." As a result of the t-bone he spent the rest of the day with a NQR handling kart.
